EXHIBITION: Zuzanna Karolewska ~ Otway Horizons Opening and Artist Resiency.

OTWAY HORIZONS EXHIBITION

Wild, green and everchanging. This is my journey through the horizons of our beautiful region, the ancient Gadubanud Country. The same hill, the beach you know so well, the path on your way to work will look different every day depending on the weather, time of the day and light. Next time you go outside, have a look around, observe and contemplate the interaction of the line of the land you're so lucky to be standing on, with the skies and join my journey.

EXHIBITION: My Friends and their Clay ~ OCTOBER Resident Artist and Opening

My Friends and their Clay is a celebration of the animism inherent in works of clay and other objects. The works featured in this collection were created over several months by four women linked in friendship and the shared contemplation of beauty and landscape. Throughout the creating period, sample works were shared amongst one another, inviting each other to harness inspiration to create new work in response to the spirit emerging from the initial work.

ABWF: Portable Seaweed library

A glamping library with books about sea-weed and soothing ocean sounds, creating a contemplative space for you to kick back and relax and get educated. It is a calm call for action – to arm ourselves with knowledge; to continue making personal connections, and to form collectives – amongst authors, artists, marine biologists and the public, so that once enough people have removed their eco-blinders when it comes to marine algae we are mobilised for positive environmental change.

Erin Taube Contemporary Dancer : The Project Space Rresident Artist May 2023

Artist Bio

I am an emerging contemporary dance artist, having recently completed my Bachelor in Fine Arts (Dance) at the Victorian College of the Arts. My practice centres around the connotations of lineage and legacy, what we choose to take with us and leave behind as we move forward as humans in everyday life and as a society. Throughout my time at VCA I created a number of film dances including ‘The space between’ (November 2020) which explored possibilities of multiple realities/dimensions, and questioned who inhabits such spaces. I also created ‘Moving Parts’ (November 2021) in collaboration with Anna Tolotchkov which questioned the relationship between identity and the notion of borders, countries and the undefined spaces that exist between them. In the midst of Melbourne's sixth lockdown I also created ‘Overflow’ (August 2021), filmed on the lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung people at the Cascades in Metcalfe, Victoria, a place in which I formed many joyous childhood memories. This piece spoke to the reassuring energy a place can hold, and the importance of being humbled by nature. Most recently I created ‘Fidget’ in August of 2022 for Lucy Guerin Inc’s ‘Out of Bounds’ program. This 10 minute piece explored the communicative nature of the human shoulder. As the most mobile joint in the body with a tremendous range of motion, I delved into the conversational nature of the shoulder and examined the effects on the audience through both choreography and a structured improvisation.

RE(Emerge)

Since graduating in November of 2022 I chose to relocate myself from Melbourne to Apollo Bay and take some time away from formal dance class in order to let my body and mind heal, and to give myself some distance from the Melbourne dance scene. I have found this time away from formal dance training to be extremely nourishing, having strengthened my sense of self and values as an artist. In the last few months of studying in Melbourne I found that dancing became a source of competitiveness, pressure, and anxiety for me which revolved around viewing dance as a way to prove my self-worth to others. Since moving down to the coast I have begun to approach dance more intuitively, improvising when I feel like moving my body, and using it as a tool to process my emotions and express myself. I have discovered that there is a lot of value to be found in creating whilst surrounded by nature and a slow-living approach to life, giving me perspective and re-connecting to the joy dance provided me as a child. I feel ready to start creating and returning to dance in a way that supports and assists my growth, and feel that this residency provides an opportunity to re-emerge as a joyous dancer with a stronger sense of artistry and clarity about my values as a maker and mover.

OTWAY NIGHT: An Exhibition by Karlijn Sas

This exhibit showcases works created this year, where the Otway night seems to be of great influence. Some artworks were inspired by the baths taken outside while Karlijn and her partner Steve were renovating their bathroom. Sitting in the warm water and taking the time to see all the colours in our spectacular night sky, made many intuitive paintings end up being night landscapes.
