STORIES FROM THE SEA: PORTABLE SEAWEED LIBRARY
A WORDfest event presented by Seaweed Appreciation Society International (SASi), brought to you by Apollo Bay Arts Inc and made possible by Coastcare Victoria.
SAT 29th & SUN 30th JULY, 10am-2pm at The Project Space
A glamping library with books about seaweed and soothing ocean sounds creates a contemplative space for you to kick back and relax and get educated. It is a calm call for action – to arm ourselves with knowledge; to continue making personal connections, and to form collectives – amongst authors, artists, marine biologists, and the public, so that once enough people have removed their eco-blinders when it comes to marine algae we are mobilized for positive environmental change.
FREE EVENT, open to all ages that can enjoy a contemplative space. Tickets are not required please drop in as you feel anytime between 10am & 2pm, Saturday & Sunday. We kindly ask that you register your attendance at the door. This event was made possible by Coastcare Victoria.
Opening Studio/Algaeglyph Launch
A DEVELOPMENT LAB initiative Facilitated by The PROJECT SPACE presented by LICHEN KELP & Seaweed Appreciation Society International (SASi) for Apollo Bay WORDfest .
Come and meet the RE(Emerge) ARTIST IN RESIDENCE for JULY at The Project Space; Lichen Kelp founder of the Seaweed Appreciation Society International and experience the 3D kinetic lighting installation she has been developing while in residence. Using foraged kelps and 3D glasses, the work features motion and coloured lights to create an interactive and hallucinatory three-dimensional kelp forest on land.
Thursday 3rd August 5pm-7pm
Her curatorial projects include Seaweed Appreciation Society international (SASi), School of Untourism- East Gippsland and the travelling residency program; Forum of Sensory Motion as well as her performance picnic series MULCH. These seek to build temporal, improvised and multi-species communities around shared research topics including marine algae, estuarine ecologies, cuttlefish mating ceremonies and plant cultivation. Creating enhanced experiences through bio-mutual gatherings and live, often improvised collective actions, these projects provide a community engaged model of psycho-ecological exploration
Artist Bio
Lichen Kelp is an artist, performer and curator. Her solo work investigates ephemeral biological processes and the transubstantiation of chemical reactions. Melting, subliming, fruiting, flowering, decomposing, bubbling and shapeshifting are explored through field work, photography and live experiments emerging from liquid landscapes.
Performing as part of Kelping with Dylan Martorell as well as sometime members Benjamin Hancock and Jason Hood, she creates haptic and multi-sensorial unfolding scenographies, with soundscapes derived from electronic ikebana; local botanicals and handbuilt electronics as well as hydrophones, water percussion and ice based touch sensitive instruments.
(RE)Emerging + Growing Female Artists Residency
local creative women of the GOR + Otways of all ages and cultural backgrounds to exhibit at the project space with a monthly placement residency. Wonderfully creative women for all sorts of reasons may find that their lives get put on hold or displaced and their creative practice is quite often the first thing that gets put on the back burner. 2023 is the year to reemerge with help and love. You can re-emerge and grow at any age and in any place. This is a safe nurturing space for experimentation and community. Welcome.
